Another - light novel Reviews
The hardcover is the novel and the softcover is the manga! Have both and love them!
If you are a fan of the Anime or Manga by the same name ( or just someone who loves scary/creepy books ) then you definitely have to pick this book up. This novel is where it all started, and you can finally own an english translated copy in PRINT thanks to the awesome Yen Press. I thought the translation was pretty good, everything made sense to me. I didn't feel like I was missing anything. That being said, this is by far the scariest/creepiest book I have read, and I probably won't find one scarier/creepier. I have read some scary books in the past, but didn't really feel anything with those. With this book, I definitely felt creeped out if not full on scared. I actually had to keep my bedside lamp on all night because for some reason I thought it was a good idea to read in the middle of the night before I went to bed. It might not be that way for you, though. I am kinda a lightweight when it comes to scary/creepy things. But whether you're a lightweight or not, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of this book!
When I started reading this book I couldn't stop. I bought the Vol. 2 on the spot, because I just wanted to read them both as if it was just one long book.
I had heard of the anime and tried to watch it, but the something about the style, voices, etc just really put me off. I was intrigued by the story though and found that this book is what actually inspired the novel.
For those not coming into Another with prior knowledge of the story, I highly recommend you do not look up any more information. This is a mystery suspense with a lot of clues that can help you figure out what is going on while also having a very enteresting on-going story. The book has been adapted to an animation which follows the same basic story, having a few differences. I was made aware of the animation before reading the book, something I can honestly say is a bit of a pity, because the book is better.
Another novel is an excellent start to a rather thought provoking, intriguing, and sometimes hilarious story. The horror or mystery elements in play fit well into balancing those elements and making this story quite the page turner. The class 3 curse, countermeasures behind how to deal with it, as well as internal dialogue of the main character, middle schooler Sakakibara were th most interesting portions of this story. The writing and translation is clear, keeping things explained or detail in a way with smooth flowing and at times modern dialogue.
This was an excellent read! I had difficulty putting it down. It is a horror story, so there are parts that can be a bit suspenseful, but I think even people who are scared easily will be able to enjoy this book to the fullest. The characters and their actions lead the reader to try and solve the mysteries of the book right alongside the characters. The story was nothing short of fantastic.
